The Other Side

By Anh C

Before We Begin:
Before following me into this story, I would like to thank my parents and friends that supported me and helped me get through hard times when writing this novel. If it wasn’t for them, there would be no “The Other Side” presented to you today.

I would also like to thank Mark for this amazing opportunity to present this novel to all of you reading it. Now, enough about talking, let’s get into this world of “The Other Side”

Chapter One: Introduction & Sneak-peak · Evia Bairishia
-Access Granted, welcome back Mr. Hayreddin-
As one of the ten Overseers of Evia SW (Evia Bairishia Stellar Waypoint/Space Station), having an announcement broadcast at his entry is not something strange. It could be the first ever broadcast of his entry in years, he missed a lot of things while away. Even though the communications are not as great on the ships, he can still catch a few words. For example: the second greatest overseer of Evia has fallen, something good to hear as one less competitor is more opportunity for others

Just as he finally snapped out of his thoughts, his speeder reached the entrance of the space station. The silver hull reflects off the light from the blazing sun atop as it puts off the thrusters and cruises to the gate.

Every gate of Evia SW seems to emit a comforting bright blue lighting, though the space station’s higher-ups refuse to share this technology with anyone. Nobody Naven knew seemed to know how it work either.
Going past several other commercial ships, he reached the security outpost, where pilots have to stop their ship for safety examinations. He waited somewhat impatiently as two small security drones flew up from the sides of the gate, shining waves of “scanning currents” to Naven’s speeder. During this time, Naven stood up from the pilot seat and stretched his arms and legs as he knew the scanning process would take a few moments. Poking on the navigator a couple of times, he walked out of the pilot chamber in search of something to eat, though the only edible stuff on his ship is those yucky blue-green slimy orbs. Even though it doesn’t taste that good, it sure can satisfy his stomach at an insane efficiency. It is the official and the only universally approved food as it can be stored for years at least in room temperature, and it fills up hunger fast.

Swallowing the last bit of the orb down his throat, he rubbed his fingers together. He still can’t get used to the slimy feeling on his hands every time he finishes this food, and he sure hates it too. To the point that he doesn’t even want to remember its name: the Titanican Gel, a man-made slime-like gel from the Williflowers. The Titanican Gels were sold very cheap on the market. Around 12 EVC (Evia Bairishia Currency)s per kilogram.

Just minutes after he finally rubbed off the slimy feeling from his hands, his speeder rumbled a little as the auto-pilot he set up earlier went to work. Looking out the side window, he can see the speeder passing the outpost and slowly engulfed by the blue lights of the gate. As he went deeper, the comfortable blue light turned into a disturbing white shine. There is no possible way for someone to navigate through it without smashing into something, which would wind up paying for a big repair fee. This is when auto-pilot comes in handy during this situation… or maybe this gate is built for auto-pilots?

As much as he wants to just accelerate through the gate at top speed, he would definitely get fined for speeding, afterall, Evia SW is well known for its security and law enforcement, he doesn’t want to pay the police just because he doesn’t like going through the gate
After a few minutes of suffering that seem to last for eternity, the brightness finally begins to fade away, replaced by the views of the residential zones, the high “skyscrapers” (or spacescraper??) and the colorful directing lines painted the perfect wallpaper for the travelers that came here for a rest.

Naven yawned as he headed back to the pilot chamber, directing the auto-pilot to follow one of the orange directing lines heading to the “core” of the space station: High Governmental zone
